Alan “GladiusIII” Goehring finally got his hands on a World Series of Poker bracelet this week. The man from Henderson, Nevada took down the $800 No-Limit Hold’em Freezeout online at WSOP.com.
Goehring has tournament cashes dating back to 1997. It’s fair to say he’s a veteran of this crazy game. He came close to winning a bracelet in 1997 when he finished third in a $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em event for $61,845. Goehring came even closer in 1999 with a runner-up finish in the WSOP Main Event. That result banked him $768,625.
Two victories are part of Goehring’s legacy. He won the $25,00 WPT World Championship in 2003 for $1,011,886. Three years later, he triumphed in the $10,000 WPT L.A. Poker Classic for a career-best $2,391,550. He now has a WSOP bracelet to show for all his efforts.
Some 1,479 players bought into this $800 freezeout, which is a superb turnout under the current circumstances. Only 207 of those entrants received prize money. Kevin “ImaLuckSac” MacPhee, Anthony “nowb3atthat” Spinella, and Jeff “NedrudRelyt” Madsen were among those who cashed.
Louise “xILoUielx” Torres was the first player to bust from the final table. His Ah-Ks lost a coinflip to the 9d-9s of Ross “BlueTang” Gottlieb.
Scott “miamicane” Davies busted almost immediately Toress. Davies three-bet shoved with Ad-Qh after Robert “bustinballs” Kuhn opened with pocket fours. Kuhn, who won a bracelet in Event #3, called and his fours held.
Goehring Six Eliminations Away From Glory
Seventh-place and $15,307 went to Timothy “aceviper” Stearns. Kuhn sent Stearns to the showers by coming behind with his Ks-Ts against the dominating Kd-Qs. Stearns extended his lead on the 8h-9s-Qh flop but the 4s turn gave Kuhn outs. The Jd river completed Kuhn’s straight and confirmed Stearns’ demise.
Goehring claimed the tournament life of Drew “dudeguydrew” O’Connell who busted in sixth place. Goehring limped in with pocket eights and called when O’Connell jammed for 19 big blinds with ace-eight. The only paint was a king on the flop and that wasn’t enough for O’Connell to stay in the event.
The table lost another player when Brendan “clembutt” Torrejon ran out of luck. Torrejon open-shoved for around 11 big blinds with Ah-Qs and Randy “StayAlive” Ohel looked him up with the dominating As-Kd. Ohel paired his king on the flop and ace on the turn to send Torrejon home.
A huge pot went Goehring’s way to gift him half the chips in play. His quest for glory became slightly easier when Kuhn fell by the wayside in fourth. Kuhn’s last 10 big blinds went into the middle with Qs-Jc and Ross “BlueTang” Gottlieb re-shoved with Jd-Js. Those jacks held to lave only three players in the hunt for the title.
Ohel’s run ended in third-place at the hands of Goehring. The pair got it all-in on a 3c-Ks-Jd flop, Goehring with Kc-Th and Ohel with Kd-9c. Goehring hit an unnecessary runner-runner straight to send the tournament heads-up.
Title, Top Prize, and Bracelet Secured for Goehring
Heads-up was over almost as quickly as it began and Goehring was the last man standing when the dust settled.
The final hand took place at the 140,000/280,000/40,000a level. Gottlieb opened to 680,000 with Kd-9c and Goehring called with Ac-3c. The flop fell Tc-Qh-Jc, gifting Gottlieb a straight but Goehring held the nut flush draw.
Gottlieb bet 860,000 before shoving for 7,996,774 when his bet was raised to 1,720,000. Goehring called the shove to put Gottlieb at risk of elimination. The 6c turn completed Goehring’s flush and left Gottlieb drawing dead. The Jd river completed the board and brought this massive event to a conclusion.
