David Jackson Wins 2019 Borgata Fall Poker Open

David Jackson is enjoying the best poker year of his life and is showing no signs of slowing down. The Florida native added another major live poker tournament title to his resume last week in New Jersey. Jackson was one of 511 entrants in the Borgata Fall Poker Open Championship, a $2,700 buy-in event, and was the last man standing after four days of intense action.

Several high profile players made it into the top 54 finishing positions to claim some prize money. Roland Israelashvili finished Day 1C as the chip leader and eventually busted in 41st place for $5,576. Former World Series of Poker Main Event champion Joe McKeehen crashed out in 37th for $5,576. Another WSOP bracelet winner in Yaser Al-Keliddar ran out of steam in 23rd for a $6,815 addition to his bankroll.

Jackson Reaches Yet Another Final Table

A cool $24,874 was the least anyone could win by the time the final table was set. Matthew Silberzwieg collected this sum when he busted in ninth-place. The New Yorker can count himself unlucky to bust how he did because it was a battle of the blinds. Silberzweig was all in from the small blind with pocket jacks and Nikolai Markov called with kings. A king on the flop left Silberzweig drawing thinly and he was drawing dead by the turn.

Joseph Gambino’s previous largest live tournament cash was for less than $6,000 but now he has a $35,316 score to brag about. Again, it was a relatively cooler that caused Gambino to dust off his stack. Markov opened to 125,000 at the 20,000/40,000/40,000a level. Gambino three-bet to 300,000, Markov shoved and was called.

It was ace-queen of clubs for Gambino and a pair of red aces in the whole for Markov. The board provided no drama and the player count reduced by one.

Another setup hand dispatched of Sean Barringer in seventh-place for a career-best $45,230. Barringer jammed his 10 big blind stack into the middle from the button holding ace-queen. British grinder Stuart Taylor snapped him off in the big blind with ace-king of spades. The flop fell all spades, leaving Barringer drawing dead.

Taylor couldn’t put those chips to good use as he busted soon after. The British player lost all but a handful big blinds in a clash with Paul Volpe and busted soon after.

Volpe Gets Lucky Against Chasen

The final five became six when Robert Chasen suffered a bad beat against Volpe. Everyone folded to Chasen in the small blind and he open-shoved 11 big blinds. Volpe called the short stack’s shove before showing king-jack. Chasen held ace-five and a slight advantage in the hand. A timely double looked on the cards’ courtesy of an ace on the flop. That all changed, however, when Volpe caught running cars to a Broadway straight.

Fourth-place and $88,601 went to Markov who would have made a worthy champion. The New Jersey resident cashed in the Borgata Winter Poker Open in Jan. 2019 for a then career-best $21,369. Peter Walsworth is the man who busted Markov, doing so with ace-six against king-ten.

Jackson held a sizeable chip lead as play entered its three-handed phase, but Volpe was still a hot favorite. Volpe is vastly experienced with more than $5.3 million in online poker tournament winnings. The man from Pennsylvania has almost $8.3 million in live winnings, helped by three WSOP bracelets.

The players’ stacks were close to level after two more hours of grinding. With that in mind, the trio asked to pause the tournament clock to discuss a potential deal. Deal discussion bore fruit and the decision made to end the tournament as it stood now based on chips.

This meant Volpe finished in third-place for $185,131, Walsworth collected $197,337 and Jackson banked $211,098 plus the winner’s trophy.

Hard Work Paying Off For Jackson

Jackson hails from Florida and is enjoying incredible success this year. Jackson has won money constantly since his breakthrough year in 2014, but he has already won more than $810,000 in 2019 with a month of the year remaining. He won the Borgata Spring Poker Open in April 2019 for $304,929 and now has more than $2.3 million in winnings.

Speaking about his impressive run of form this year, Jackson called it life-changing. “Definitely life-changing, kind of surreal really, it’s been a good year but it feels like it has all been happening so fast.” He revealed he studies poker every day among live and online poker players. It is working, whatever he is doing.

Florida Produces Some Amazing Poker Players

Florida seems to produce more than its fair share of talented poker players. Former Team PokerStars pro Jason Mercier is one of them, a player with $19.6 million in winnings. Michael Mizrachi, Sean Winter, Sam Soverel and John Racener also hail from The Sunshine State. As do Daniel Cates, Jonathan Little and Vanessa Rousso among others.
