The 2021 PokerGO Cup came to a thrilling conclusion with Cary Katz banking a seven-figure prize. Katz was the last man standing in Event #8: $100,000 No-Limit Hold’em, and walked away with $1,058,000. Katz was the victory in the tournament, but there was joy for Daniel Negreanu, who became the 2021 PokerGO Cup champion.
Twenty-three players bought into the eight 2021 PokerGO Cup event for $100,000, which created a $2,300,000 prize pool. Such a compact field meant only the top four finishers won a slice of the pie.
Day 1 ended with five players and that quintet of stars on the money bubble. Sam Soverel busted British superstar Stephen Chidwick in sixth to bring the curtain down on proceedings. Soverel pushed all-in on a 9h-5h-9d-Jc-Tc board, and Chidwick called with Qd-Jd. However, Soverel held Kx-Qx for a straight.
Dan Smith burst the money bubble after a clash with Soverel did not go to plan. Blinds of 20,000/40,000/40,000a saw Katz min-raise to 80,000, Smith three-bet all-in for 595,000, and Soverel call. Katz ducked out of the way and watched on as Soverel’s jacks held against Smith’s lesser pocket tens.
Katz Locks In Another Major Tournament Cash
The surviving four players locked in $230,000 with Smith now on the rail. Negreanu was the man who collected this sum. The six-time WSOP bracelet winner can consider himself unlucky to bust because he committed his stack with pocket aces but lost to Soverel’s pocket eights. Soverel flopped a set to resign Negreanu to a fourth-place exit.
Negreanu stayed and watch the action unfold because Soverel would win the 2021 PokerGO Cup if he took down this event.
That looked more likely when Soverel busted a short-stacked Sean Winter in third. This gave Soverel a 3.3 million to 1.3 million chip advantage over Katz.
Katz clawed his way back into contention and even showed some bluffs to his opponent. Soverel found himself down to a handful of big blinds when he shoved with ten-nine. Katz called with queen-four, flopped a four, and it proved enough to triumph in this event.
Soverel scooped $644,000 for his bridesmaid finish, with Katz securing a $1,058,000 payout.
Katz now has eight scores of at least $1 million and lifetime earnings of $32,483,386. The uber-rich businessman knows his way around a high-stakes poker table.

2021 PokerGO Cup Top 10
Negreanu’s fourth-place finish, and Soverel’s runner-up exit, in the final event meant the former was crowned 2021 PokerGO Cup champion. Negreanu amassed 537 points plus $996,200 in prize money during the festival. Soverel would have finished on 568 points had he defeated Katz heads-up.
Ali Imsirovic finished in second-place overall with Katz in third, David Coleman fourth, and Alex Foxen fifth.
